About Doctor

Dr. Xu (pronounced Shu) received his Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Science degrees from the University of Iowa in 1991, including a Certificate of Operative Dentistry with emphasis on Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Xu has been restoring patients’ smiles with porcelain veneers since 1986. He was a clinical instructor for dental students and assisted in presentation of numerous courses in advanced cosmetic dentistry to other dentists. He is also trained in the newest implant techniques.

Upon graduation, Dr. Xu joined the United States Army Dental Corps, serving at Fort Lewis, Washington, from 1991 to 1995. Dr. Xu’s expertise in cosmetic dentistry provided him an opportunity to offer esthetic dentistry to countless officers and enlisted personnel. Dr. Xu presented numerous table clinics on porcelain veneers and composite bonding at local dental society meetings and the Northwest Dental Conference.

Dr. Xu’s passion for providing optimal dental care along with his love for the Pacific Northwest led him to enter private practice in Tacoma, Washington in 1995. Since then he has taken numerous dental courses including those with a focus on biological dentistry and mercury-free fillings. Our office has not used mercury “silver” fillings since 1985. Dr. Xu whole-heartedly believes that your oral health has great impact on your general health.

Dr. Xu is a proud member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, the American Dental Association, the Washington State Dental Association, and the Pierce County Dental Society. He also participates in dental study clubs and attends dental courses throughout the year.

Dr. Xu has proudly served our nation in the Army Reserves for more than 20 years. His recent deployments include a mission to the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota and to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He has also been an active participant in the Children’s Oral Health Day for many years.

On a personal note, Dr. Xu is happily married and has two beautiful children. His hobbies include table tennis, Chinese marshal arts, and traveling with his family.

Meet Our Staff

DeAnna:

As Financial Coordinator my expertise focuses on insurance and co-insurance orchestration. I assist our patients by facilitating the cost components of their individual dental health goals and smile restoration. I have grown professionally with Advanced Dental Care since 2005, but have been in the dental industry for 18 years, since earning a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. When grey skies get to be too much, my family and I enjoy Pacific Island escapades in balmier latitudes!

Patty:

I have been practicing Dental Hygiene for over thirty years. I have worked in private dental practices and as a College Clinical Instructor. I graduated from University of Oregon, then later earned another degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Washington. My favorite aspect of my job is building trusting relationships with patients through careful periodontal evaluations. I have found that through being gentle and encouraging, my patients and I create a foundation for mutual success.

Maria:

Hello! I am the Scheduling Coordinator at Advanced Dental Care. My career in dentistry began after graduating Clover Park Technical College’s Dental Office Assistant Program in 2002. I always look forward to assisting patients with any needs they may have. I pride myself on dental excellence and compassion-centered patient service. “How may I help you with your smile today?”

Bill:

After traveling all over the world as an “Army brat”, my family settled in Lakewood, Washington in 1994. It was there I attended Clover Park Technical College for Dental Assisting in 1996. I was drawn to dentistry in hopes of helping patients with their unique dental needs, and as a forum for expressing my artistic side. Working with Dr. Xu and the Advanced Dental Care team, in an expanded capacity for 13 enjoyable years, has empowered me to achieve both goals. In my off-time I cherish life with family. I also indulge the hobbies of fishing, bowling and reading. Personal Factoid: On weekends I disc jockey at a local club in Tacoma!

Carrie:

My career in dentistry started in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1999. I completed my Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Eastern Washington University and have been practicing at Advanced Dental Care since 2003. Playing a vital role in my patients’ dental health inspires me greatly. Personally I love experiencing world cultures and try to incorporate travel into both my professional and personal time whenever possible. I’ve been to: South America, Dominican Republic, Uganda Africa, and Negril Jamaica to serve as a volunteer Dental Hygienist. Next stop: Nepal in 2009, for yet another mission in dentistry!

Rachael:

I earned the credential of Certified Dental Assistant after graduating Clover Park Technical College in 2000. I have enjoyed serving patients at Advanced Dental Care since 2006. I am proud to be part of a team that focuses on new-age, health conscious philosophies, and uses state of the art equipment. The most rewarding aspect of my job is gaining the trust of an apprehensive patient– transforming a smile with comfort and care. During free time I like outdoor escapes with family and friends to appreciate the beauty of our Pacific Northwest.
